Text - 🤍 In this segment of our “How far away is it” video book, we cover the Andromeda galaxy along with our local group of galaxies, including some of the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. We begin with Edwin Hubble’s discovery of a Cepheid variable star in what was thought to be a Milky Way nebula. The star was V1 and it changed the history of astronomy. We also take a deep dive into the galaxy’s disk, and point out what was going on here on our planet when the light we see left Andromeda on its journey into our telescopes. We finish with a look at Andromeda’s collision course with our Milky Way. Next, we identify the local group of galaxies including: Triangulum with its great star birth H II region NGC 604; irregular galaxy NGC 6822 with its unique Hubble V H II region; the recently discovered galaxy IC 10; nearly edge on galaxy 3109; and Sextans A. We then cover 5 of the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way including Sagittarius Dwarf, Sculptor Dwarf and Fornax Dwarf along with the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud. Then we examine some of the amazing nebula within these two dwarf galaxies including: Supernova Remnant N 63A, SN 0509-67.5, the Tarantula Nebula, 30 Doradus, Hodge 301, the Double Bubble, LH 95, NGC 2074, NGC 602, NGC 346 and others. We conclude with a review of the galaxies we covered marked on a map of the Local Group.

Visible from the southern hemisphere even to an unaided eye, the Small Magellanic Cloud is the smaller of the two irregular dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. Like how the moon orbits the Earth and the Earth orbits the Sun, the dwarf irregular galaxies orbit the Milky Way, i.e., they are gravitationally bound to the Milky Way. Studying about them helps us learn more about the globular clusters and gives us clues about the origins of supermassive blackholes.

Have you seen the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds？ They are among the most spectacular objects in the southern hemisphere night sky， belonging to the Milky Way's companion galaxy. #look up there is starlight
#LargeMagellanicCloud #audioversity ~~~ Large Magellanic Cloud ~~~ Title: What is Large Magellanic Cloud?, Explain Large Magellanic Cloud, Define Large Magellanic Cloud Created on: 2019-01-21 Source Link: 🤍 Description: The Large Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. At a distance of about 50 kiloparsecs , the LMC is the second- or third-closest galaxy to the Milky Way, after the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal and the possible dwarf irregular galaxy known as the Canis Major Overdensity. Based on readily visible stars and a mass of approximately 10 billion solar masses, the diameter of the LMC is about 14,000 light-years , making it roughly one one-hundredth as massive as the Milky Way. This makes the LMC the fourth-largest galaxy in the Local Group, after the Andromeda Galaxy , the Milky Way, and the Triangulum Galaxy . The LMC is classified as a Magellanic spiral. It contains a stellar bar that is geometrically off-center, suggesting that it was a barred dwarf spiral galaxy before its spiral arms were disrupted, likely by tidal interactions from the Small Magellanic Cloud , and the Milky Way's gravity. With a declination of about -70°, the LMC is visible as a faint "cloud" only in the southern celestial hemisphere and from latitudes south of 20° N, straddling the border between the constellations of Dorado and Mensa, and appears longer than 20 times the Moon's diameter from dark sites away from light pollution. The Milky Way and the LMC are expected to collide in ~2.4 billion years To see your favorite topic here, fill out this request form: 🤍 Source: Wikipedia.org articles, adapted under 🤍 license. The Large Magellanic Cloud, known as the LMC, is a nearby satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. At a distance of around 160,000 light-years, the LMC is the third closest galaxy to us. But the LMC is more than just a nice little sidekick.

Data from the European Space Agency Gaia space observatory help us understand the different stellar populations in the two main companion galaxies to the Milky Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. This animation represents the different types of stars in these galaxies, and shows the dramatic bridge of stars connecting them, spanning 75,000 light years.
The largest of the milky ways satellites, the large magellanic cloud is a dwarf irregular galaxy orbiting the milky way. It contains one of the brightest star forming regions in the local universe, knows as the Tarantula Nebula. So much of star formation also comes with death of stars. One such supernova is SN 1987a, which was one of the closest supernovas that happened in the recent times and hence has been studied in great detail.

Zoom into VFTS 243 Large Magellanic Cloud a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way
This zoom sequence starts with a very broad view of the southern skies and closes in on one of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way — Large Magellanic Cloud. Within this galaxy several very faint and rare cool eclipsing binary double stars have been identified. As the two component stars in these binaries orbit each other they pass in front of one another and their combined brightness, seen from a distance, decreases. By studying how the light changes, and other properties of these systems, astronomers can measure the distances to eclipsing binaries very accurately. A long series of observations of these objects has now led to the most accurate determination so far of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud — a crucial step in the determination of distances across the Universe.
