For years during the Cold War the KGB's only access to US and UK secrets was through an Australian spy. The ASIO mole handed over highly classified information for wads of cash, but none of his colleagues suspected a thing. After the Soviet Union's collapse, information sourced through Russian KGB defectors sparked the most extensive mole hunt in ASIO's history. Four Corners reveals the identity of the traitor, and the full extent of his betrayal.
Documentary exploring the murky circumstances behind the escape of one of Britain’s most notorious spies. In 1963, at the height of the Cold War, a well-educated Englishman called Kim Philby boarded a Russian freighter in Beirut and defected to Moscow from under the nose of British Intelligence. For the best part of thirty years he had been spying for the Soviet Union, much of that time while holding senior jobs in MI6. Fifty years on, more questions than answers still surround his defection. Had he really confessed before he went? Was his escape from justice an embarrassing mistake or part of the plan? This film, shot in Beirut, London and Moscow, sets out to find the answers, revealing the blind spots in the British ruling class that made it so vulnerable to KGB penetration. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released surveillance videos of some of the Russian spies arrested last year in the US. Using spy tools like invisible ink and hidden messages in online photos, the bureau's investigators built up a detailed file of the spies as they passed information and money. But some intelligence officials worry the documents could give too much away and alert would-be culprits of tell-tale signs they are being watched. Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Washington.

In an intriguing and at times robust encounter, Tara Brown interviews a woman our spy agency, ASIO, claims is an agent tasked by Russia to gather sensitive information. Her name is Marina Sologub, and up until earlier this year she’d been living and working in Adelaide for three years. Now she’s in immigration detention waiting to be kicked out of the country. As Brown reports, cases like this would normally be kept top secret, but quite remarkably a very bold Sologub is refusing to go quietly, denying accusations she’s a spy, and vowing to fight her deportation to the bitter end. After being exposed, he turned FBI informant and has since stayed in the United States, becoming a published author of "Deep Undercover" and an expert on espionage and Russian intelligence. He was recruited into the KGB after being approached by a member of the East German secret police at the University of Jena in 1969. Barsky rates the realism of Russian spying tactics such as message interception, surveillance, and sleeper cells in "The Fourth Protocol" (1987), "Anna" (2019), "Bridge of Spies" (2015), "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (2011), and the popular TV show "The Americans" (2013-2018). He also breaks down physical training and spies' backgrounds in "Red Sparrow" (2018), "Salt" (2010), and Black Widow's first on-screen appearance in "Iron Man 2" (2010). He also discusses the Bond movie franchise and its depiction of Russian spies in "From Russia With Love" (1963). Berlin is the scene of countless agent stories. Just before Christmas 2022, a scandal rocked the German Federal Intelligence Service 🤍Bundesnachrichtendienst. An employee allegedly spied for Russian secret services and reported directly to Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin's network of agents is considered the strongest weapon against the West. Berlin has been already the scene of countless spy stories, real and fictional, from the Cold War to today. Its history as a spy-craft hotspot began after World War 2. The Allies ended Nazi rule and divided the capital into four sectors. Nowhere else did the superpowers of West and East meet as closely as in the divided city, making it a perfect place for spies. Whether they were working for the Russian KGB, the American NSA and CIA, the British MI6 or the East German "Stasi", the respective agents lived secret lives with fake identities, spying on the other side. The island of West Berlin, surrounded by the socialist East Germany, also inspired countless thrillers, be it Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies", the James Bond film “Octopussy" or "The Bourne Conspiracy". Berlin is simply a must for top-class spooks! On this episode of Arts Unveiled, we explore the covert side of Berlin in search of espionage locations: Checkpoint Charlie, the Friedrichstraße train station, the Teufelsberg and the Glienicker Bridge. Along the way, we meet ex-agents with unbelievable stories, such as Mr. and Mrs. Schevitz. For years, the American couple lived in West Berlin as top spies for East Germany. Their highly explosive goal: to spy on the German chancellor. We learn how famous double agent George Blake sabotaged secret projects like the tunnel construction of "Operation Gold". And we show why Berlin remains a hotbed of espionage: in recent years, for example, NSA wiretapping scandals and a contract killing attributed to people with ties to the old KGB have made headlines. It seems Berlin is still a popular playing field for intelligence agencies. 00:00 Intro 00:57 Berlin - The Frontline of the Cold War 03:44 Spy Stations: Journey into Darkness 04:42 Friedrichstrasse Border Crossing 06:35 The Stasi 07:26 Normannenstrasse: Stasi Headquarters 08:35 Glienicker Bridge: Agent Exchange 10:52 Teufelsberg Listening Station 12:26 Marienfelde Refugee Processing Center 15:17 Berlin-Gatow Airfield: Spies in the Airspace 17:50 Allied Museum Berlin 20:40 Checkpoint Charlie Border Crossing Point 22:40 What happened after the Fall of the Berlin Wall? 23:48 German Spy Museum Berlin 24:14 Berlin Spies Today For the German version: 🤍 #dwhistoryandculture #berlin #jamesbond #007 #spies #agents #gdr #doubleagent #kgb #cia #coldwar #bnd #stevenspielberg #teufelsberg #checkpointcharlie #espionage #putin #berlinwall #secretservice #humphreybogart #bordercontrol #westgermany #ddr For more visit: 🤍 ⮞ Follow DW Culture on Facebook: 🤍 ⮞ Follow DW Culture on Twitter: twitter.com/DW_Culture Please follow DW's netiquette: 🤍
