And where it leaves war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh. Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive — eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region. They are the first to cross the border since the enclave was seized by Azerbaijan. The refugees entered after the government in Yerevan announced plans to move those made homeless by the fighting. Azerbaijan retook the area inhabited by some 120,000 ethnic Armenians saying it wants to re-integrate them as "equal citizens”. But Armenia has warned they may face ethnic cleansing. An indescribable nightmare is unfolding as thousands of Armenians are on the run following Azerbaijan's military takeover of their homeland. Ruben Vardanyan, a billionaire businessman and philanthropist of Armenian descent, was taken to Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, authorities said. The mountain road leading out of Nagrono-Karabakh towards Armenia has been clogged for days, as people continue to flee the region. Azerbaijan's brutal 24-hour military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh swiftly defeated the Karabakh Armenian forces. The bombing was so relentless, there was no way to bury the truckloads of lifeless bodies and now ethnic Armenians have begun to leave the capital for Armenia en masse. As Azerbaijan wrests control of the breakaway region, FRANCE 24's Rochelle FERGUSON BOUYAHI is joined by Dr. Taline Papazian, Senior Lecturer at Sciences Po Aix-en-Provence and Director-General at the Armenia Peace Initiative (API). She warns that the deadly conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the ensuing mass exodus, has 'very high potential for destabilisation' in Armenia. Relations with Russia have plummeted, anger is high in Armenia, and the future of the once-very popular Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hangs in the balance. 🔔 Subscribe to France 24 now: 🤍 🔴 LIVE - Watch FRANCE 24 English 24/7 here: 🤍 🌍 Read the latest International News and Top Stories: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on X (Twitter): 🤍 Browse the news in pictures on Instagram: 🤍 Discover our TikTok videos: 🤍 Get the latest top stories on Telegram: 🤍

The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia argued openly in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in testy exchanges that underlined the extent of their dispute over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. During a meeting in Moscow, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan raised the issue of the Lachin corridor while Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev listened to his concerns with a smirk, before Putin closed off the conversation, noting that the topic was sensitive.
