The longest 'lightning' talk ever. This is a long (and practice) version of a much shorter talk delivered for the Tampa Bay Android Developers Group in Aug 2014. Hour by hour diary with code and demonstration. Programmed with HTML 5 Canvas and no frameworks or game engine. The challenge was 'start from nothing' so I took a different approach and applied this to the technique and not the subject of the game. I used notepad only and programmed a Javascript HTML 5 version of the Atari Jag game 'Downfall'. Pretty simple game. I implement vertical parallax scrolling, tile maps, neon glow, collision detection, SVG animation and basic sprite movement. RPGs are a genre of game that I have always had trouble grappling with growing up. I always felt as though I needed some angle or gimmick to approach them from. At least, that's what I thought for most of my life up until recently. In spite of what the title says, I think I do, in fact, get what draws people to RPGs now.
