While it doesn't bring as many visual changes as GNOME 40 did, there are still loads of stuff to talk about, especially if you consider that GNOME is now taking steps to become a platform, not just a desktop, so stick around till the end to hear my thoughts on this. 👏 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: Get access to an exclusive weekly podcast, vote on the next topics I cover, and get your name in the credits: YOUTUBE: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 Or, you can donate whatever you want: 🤍 🏆 FOLLOW ME ELSEWHERE: Join us on our new Discord server: 🤍 Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 📷 GEAR I USE: Sony Alpha A6600 Mirrorless Camera: 🤍 Sigma 56mm Fixed Prime Lens: 🤍 Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse: 🤍 Bluetooth Space Grey Mac Keyboard: 🤍 Logitech Brio 4K Webcam: 🤍 LG Curved Ultrawide Monitor: 🤍 Logitech White Speakers: 🤍 Xbox Controller: 🤍 *Amazon Links are affiliate codes and generate small commissions to support the channel* 00:00 Intro 01:38 GNOME Software 03:59 Desktop changes 06:52 Applications Changes 08:18 The GNOME Platform OK The first BIG thing is GNOME software, the App Store of GNOME. The homepage has also been vastly improved, with big colorful headers for featured apps, a list of categories with nice artwork, and some editor's picks to showcase specific applications. The application detail pages also have received a lot of love. There is a lot more info, presented in a much more user friendly way, with big tiles. You'll find the download size, or a safety level determined by which permissions the app can access. You'll also get a tile to let you know on which devices the app will work well, including desktop, mobile or tablets, and an age rating. The version history is better laid out, and you get some nice info about the app's license and open source status, which is really nice. Finally, you get some links to the project's website, translations, bug tracker, help, or even donations, and the user reviews at the bottom. Oh, and you also get a lot more space for these screenshots. ## Desktop You now get a lot more options to change how this layout works, though, as the work to port GNOME Tweaks settings into the main settings app continues. You'll find a new mutitasking settings panel, with a bunch of options. The first one is the ability to disable the hot corner for the activities view. You can also disable the tiling of windows when moving them to a screen edge, useful for multi-monitor setups when you want to just whip windows between displays. Workspaces can also be configured to be dynamic, as in "a new workspace is created each time the previous one has something in it", or with a fixed number that you can define. You also get to choose if your workspaces span all of your displays, or are limited to your primary display, with secondary monitors having their own unique workspace. That's another welcome improvement for multi monitor users. Finally, you can decide to display apps from all workspaces when using alt+Tab, or only count those from the current virtual desktop. On laptops and devices with a battery, you now also get power profiles, directly from the main system menu. In terms of settings, you'll also get the ability to disable animations in the accessibility settings. Input latency has also been improved, which should be more noticeable on low refresh rates display. ## Apps Now, in terms of the default apps, GNOME Calendar has received the ability to open .ics files and import their content to any of the already existing calendars. This means you can finally set it up as your default calendar application. Clicking on an event also shows a new event popover. Nautilus, the file manager, now displays some information in the Trash folder, to let you know if your items will be deleted after a certain period of time. A Settings button will let you go and change that behavior. It also now can compress archives into zip and password protected zip formats. There is also a brand new application for handling remote desktops, called Connections. It can handle RDP and VNC and connect to Windows, Mac or Linux hosts.

GNOME 41 is not as dramatic of an update as the GNOME 40 release earlier this year. As you are about to see, the latest uplift includes a crop of new features, a bunch of improvements, plus one or two interesting design changes. Most likely Ubuntu 21.10 will not feature GNOME 41, unfortunately. Fedora 35 is the only distribution that features GNOME 41 out of the box. The GNOME project today released GNOME 41, the latest version of its open source desktop environment. And it brings some interesting additions to the table. As with most GNOME desktop updates, GNOME 41 is packed with an assortment of new features, user interface tweaks, and performance improvements. GNOME says that “[…] with these changes, GNOME is smarter, more flexible, and offers a richer and more engaging experience than ever before.” Source code for the latest release is available to download from the GNOME website from today. However, most Linux users will want to wait for their distro maintainers to package it up and push it out to them. On rolling release Linux distros (like Arch) this will be relatively soon. On fixed-release distros (like Ubuntu) it’ll be …sometime in the future. GNOME 41’s New Features If you enjoyed our look at the top GNOME 41 features a couple of weeks back you’ll be familiar with all of the key changes. Eye-catching design changes in GNOME Software make it easier to browse and discover apps. You’ll find new app categories, new promo images, and larger app screenshots. Plus, GNOME Software 41 features new info tiles that convey important information about each app, such as its download size, form-factor support, and security ranking. A crop of new Mobile Network settings are available. These allow configuring mobile 2G, 3G, 4G, and GSM/LTE connections, enabling data roaming, mobile data connection, and more. The settings only appear if a supported modem is present. Also included are new Multitasking settings to configure workspace and window management features, such as:. enable/disable hot corners and screen edges; choose a dynamic or fixed number of workspaces; showing workspaces on all displays/primary display only; and tweaking the behaviour of the Super + Tab shortcut. GNOME 41 also includes a new remote desktop client called Connections. Designed to replace similar functionality previously included in Boxes app, the new Connections tool is said to be easy-to-use and simple to set up. It supports VNC and RDP connections. Other key changes in GNOME 41 include: Power modes can be changed in the System Status menu Power Saver mode automatically turns on when battery level is low Music app has a refreshed UI with new playbar and rounded album covers Nautilus can now create encrypted .zip archives Calendar supports importing events from .ics files Improved dark mode in Web Better performance #GNOME #DESKTOPENVIRONMENT #GNOMEDESKTOP #GNOME 41 #Fedora Todays Video - GNOME 41 Desktop Environment Officially Released, This Is What’s New!
