This computer science video compares the RGB colour model with the YCbCr colour model. It shows how both RGB and YCbCr can be visualised in three dimensional space, and how the grayscale relates to both colour models. The evolution of YCbCr from YUV is mentioned, along with the need for YCbCr as a means of encoding digital TV and video. The purpose of the luma component, Y, and the two chroma components, Cb and Cr, are explained. The key benefit of YCbCr as a colour model that separates the luminosity (brightness) of a pixel from the colour information is also explained. This makes conversion from RGB to YCbCr one of the key steps of the JPEG image compression algorithm. Attribution: Clip of The Adventures Of Sir Lancelot. Color is a fascinating subject. It is both incredibly subjective (ie. what makes a painting beautiful) and perfectly scientific (ie. wavelengths of light) at the same time. This talk will be a deep dive into the history and science of color and the fascinating world of human perception and the scientists that attempt to define it. Many of us are familiar with the RGB or perhaps even the sRGB color space. Generally, though, we stare at our color pickers, fiddle with the values, and pick something that looks right. However, the modern sRGB specification follows a long lineage. It extends all the way back to the turn of the century and the CIE 1931 XYZ color space one of the earliest specified color spaces and one which is still in use today. As display technology advanced, so did our color. New color spaces emerged: CIELUV, CIELAB, YUV, HSV, HSL, RGB, sRGB. Each was molded for a specific use case, whether it was print, perceptual uniformity, compression, or LED display. By the time we work our way back to the present day, we're left with a lot of color options and a lot of questions. In reality, though, the math and science isn't all that complex. We'll start with color spaces like RGB that we know and love, and see how these naturally evolve mathematically from earlier color spaces such as CIE XYZ. More importantly, we'll see how to apply this knowledge to the decisions we make about color in our day to day work. Coding for Beginners: The RGB Color System The RGB color system represents the colors red, green, and blue. When red, green, and blue light are added together in different ways they create a broad range of colors. It is an additive color model. This means the light spectra wavelengths are added together to create the final color. It is different from the CMYK color system that is used for print that represents cyan, magenta, yellow, and black which is a subtractive color model that would apply to paints, inks, and dyes. In a subtractive model, the resultant color depends on the way a substrate reflects the light. In an additive model, the colors combined together create white while in a subtractive model, the colors mixed create black. If all component colors have zero intensity, the result is black. If all components have the same intensity, the result is gray. When the intensities of each differ, the result is a hue. If a single component has a strong intensity, the hue will near the primary color (red, green, or blue). When two components have the same strong intensity, you will generate a secondary color (cyan, magenta, yellow). Cyan is green plus blue. Magenta is blue plus red, and yellow is red plus green. Each secondary color is a complement to a primary color: red complements cyan, green complements magenta, and blue complements yellow. In practice, with the RGB model, the values of red, green, and blue are expressed as numbers between 0 and 255. color: rgb(0,0,0); is black color: rgb(255,255,255); is white color: rgb(128,128,128); is gray color: rgb(102, 255, 153); is a green Here are the same seventeen colors in the background-color property using RGB color instead: background-color: rgb(0, 255, 255); (aqua) background-color: rgb(0,0,0); (black) background-color: rgb(0, 0, 255); (blue) background-color: rgb(255, 0, 255); (fuchsia) background-color: rgb(128, 128, 128); (gray) background-color: rgb(0, 128, 0); (green) background-color: rgb(0, 255, 0);(lime) background-color: rgb(128, 0, 0); (maroon) background-color: rgb(0, 0, 128); (navy) background-color: rgb(128, 128, 0); (olive) background-color: rgb(255, 165, 0); (orange) background-color: rgb(128, 0, 128); (purple) background-color: rgb(255, 0, 0); (red) background-color: rgb(192, 192, 192); (silver) background-color: rgb(0, 128, 128); (teal) background-color: rgb(255,255,255); (white) background-color: rgb(255, 255, 0); (yellow) Jumpstart Your Learning of HTML and CSS is now LIVE! Download the Challenge Image: 🤍 We often use Curves in our workflow. It's a staple in almost every genre of photography. But how often do you venture into the beautiful world of color or RGB Curves? Probably not as often as you'd care to mention. No worries, I didn't either. At least not until I realized how to use them effectively in my images. You see, the color curves are just as difficult to tame as the RGB or luminance curve. But once you get the hang of them, they become just as second nature. It would be best if you thought like a painter first. It's a lot like mixing colors on a palette. Next, you must understand the color curve's function and how it affects the image globally. It will add color. It doesn't care much about the perceived color in your photos like HSL and Selective Color.
